Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, Abu Iyyad. I want to ask a question regarding AI – Artificial Intelligence. Recently, I encountered a post who claimed people who design and create the AI systems, can eventually make fully “autonomous” systems that can think for themselves, become self-aware, etc., and have “feelings”. They claim this because all they’re doing is replicating and mimicking the processes of the human brain with math, vectors and coding or whatever, and therefore it would be the same.
This was highly disturbing to me for many reasons. What should the Muslim think when they encounter these kinds of philosophers regarding AI? Can they really do that?
Another question I have, is about the same thing. Some people claim that once they finally create a fully autonomous AI system, there could be dangers of these systems doing cyber attacks, and all sorts of evil things. What should be my thoughts regarding that as a Muslim?
Wā alaikum salām wā rahmatullāhi wā barakatuhu, this is not Abu Iyaad but will pass your question on to the Shaykh, hopefully he’ll find time to reply, إن شاء الله
