Lesson 34 Upload – Taqreeb at-Tadmuriyyah

Some of the matters or points covered:

  • Continuation of Principle/Rule 6) – in particular the correct methodology in negating for Allāh which is based upon the Qur’ān and Sunnah (sound authentic revelation) and distinguished from the methodology and principles of negation of people of Kalām and deviation.
  • Tashbīh (resemblance) is a vague term and not used in the Qur’ān. From some angles we have to accept that there is some resemblance, resemblance in the ma’na (meaning), which is how we get to know Allāh.
  • Can’t use this (negating tashbīh) as a general principle because of its flaws like the two reasons mentioned in the previous lesson (#33).
  • Discussion and commentary on the handout with the table containing four columns to compare the principle used in negation:
    1) Negation upon the Book and the Sunnah.
    2) Negation of Resemblance.
    3) Negation of Jismīyyah (embodiment).
    4) Negation of Hawādith (that Allāh acts through His will).
  • How to respond to the following scenario: someone comes along and speaks with clear misguidance saying the likes of: ‘Allāh becomes ill, Allāh becomes sad, Allāh gives birth’. Two ways mentioned.
  • How reacting to this scenario by saying ‘this can’t be true because it would imply Allāh is a jism (body)’ is incorrect with five reasons provided why.
  • Mention of how those affected by kalām reject Allāh being above the throne and deny Allāh acts according to His will based upon “Shaykh” Aristotle’s ten categories.

Lesson 33 Upload – Taqreeb at-Tadmuriyyah

Some of the matters or points covered:

  • Continuation of Principle/Rule 6) regarding describing Allāh with affirmation and negation, the guiding principles and rules we should follow. Specifically in this lesson a deep dive of the correct methodology in negating for Allāh.
  • Brief reminder regarding the book being studied, what it’s about and importance of the subject matter.
  • Allāh has no rival, likeness, equal – these are general negations.
  • The principle people of the Sunnah follow in negating for Allāh – three categories negated:
    1) Any deficiency, fault or imperfection in and of itself e.g. ignorance, blindness, tiredness, death, etc.
    2) Any deficiency or defects in His attributes e.g. Allāh has hearing, He hears everything at all times and there’s no deficiency in His hearing unlike our hearing. Same with all other attributes.
    3) Any likeness between Allāh and His creation. We don’t say my hearing is like Allāh’s hearing, etc.
  • People of deviance say we negate resemblance for Allāh which is not correct, is ambiguous, vague and as a principle can’t be relied upon. Reasons and lines of argument mentioned why this is so.
  • Reply to the belief and misguidance of the Mu’tazilah who deny the attributes of Allāh upon the claim that if we affirm the attributes they must be eternal things so there must be multiple entities, gods.

Lesson 32 Upload – Taqreeb at-Tadmuriyyah

Some of the matters or points covered:

  • Principle/Rule 6) regarding describing Allāh with affirmation and negation, the guiding principles and rules we should follow.
  • Three categories of things negate for Allāh:
    1) Any deficiency, defect or imperfection in and of itself e.g. blindness, deafness, dumbness, tiredness, becoming weary, etc.
    2) Any deficiency or imperfection in His attributes i.e. in His life, knowledge, power, etc. Rather He is perfect in His life, knowledge, power, etc.
    3) Any likeness between Allāh and His creation. So we don’t say for example the power of the creatures is like the power of Allāh, etc.
  • Evidences from the Qur’ān for where each of these three categories have been derived.
  • Important clarification regarding difference between Tamtheel (likeness) and Tashbeeh (resemblance).
  • Two reasons why can’t just rely on negating resemblance for Allāh.
  • Response to a counter-argument regarding one thing sharing some aspect with another and what is possible or permissible for these things with some terms explained like Jā’iz, Mumtanih, Wājib.
  • The great danger of the principles of the people of Kalām, innovation and misguidance.

Lesson 31 Upload – Taqreeb at-Tadmuriyyah

Some of the matters or points covered:

  • Continuation and conclusion of Principle/Rule 5).
  • The two types of ambiguity: 1) Haqīqī (actual, true and real) and 2) Nisbī (relative, varies from person to person).
  • Example of Haqīqī type – Day of Judgement, although been given knowledge of this (like mention of events in texts) the actual realities are unknown until they transpire and we experience them.
  • Examples relating to Nisbī type regarding 1) knowledge and 2) rulings.
  • Ambiguity or the meaning unknown or hidden for some people might be due to any or a combination of the following reasons:
    1) Deficiency in knowledge.
    2) Being neglectful in seeking knowledge.
    3) Deficiency in comprehension.
    4) Person seeking doubts, misconceptions, and has a perversion in the heart, wanting to find controversy, not seeking the truth but blinded by the truth.
  • A scholar can be asked to explain to remove the ambiguity.
  • Introduction to Principle/Rule 6) regarding describing Allāh with affirmation and negation. What are the actual principles or rules we can follow?

Lesson 30 Upload – Taqreeb at-Tadmuriyyah

Some of the matters or points covered:

  • Continuation of Principle/Rule 5).
  • Addressing misconception that the verses about the attributes of Allāh are from the ambiguous verses.
  • Further elaboration regarding three ways in which the Qur’ān has described the whole of the Qur’ān, some of which includes:
    1) Muhkam – All of the Qur’ān is most excellent of speech, discourse, eloquence and beauty in its khabar (reports). For ahkām (rulings) in Sharee’ah (law), it’s the most excellent type of justice, direction and guidance.
    2) Mutashābih – Qur’ān in its language and beauty resembles other parts, it’s coherent and congruent, no conflicts in reports e.g. story of Musa (عليه السلام) mentioned in different parts, all support each other with more details in some parts than others.
    3) Muhkam and Mutashābih – This is where issue and detail lies. Muhkam – clear and apparent verses, whether reports or rulings. This forms majority of Qur’ān and most of the common people understand this. Mutashābih – meaning is hidden to some people, verse itself is not Mutashābih, it’s the fact that some people from Muslim Ummah don’t know for whatever reason (four reasons mentioned).
  • Two categories people fall into.
  • How someone can follow the Mutashābih in order to create controversy, confusion and doubts in the hearts of people to misguide them. They presume wrong things about 1) Allāh, 2) His Book and 3) His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم). Example ayāt provided including clarification regarding use of plural “We” in Qur’ān.
  • The actual wisdom behind some of the verses being Mutashābih.
